Diverse books build empathy, fight prejudice, and transform lives
We Need Diverse Books (Tax Id: 47-1786302) strives to create a world in which all children can find themselves in the pages of a book. To reach this goal, we run programs to celebrate diverse books, mentor diverse writers and illustrators, support diverse publishing professionals, and provide books to children nationwide.
Your donation helps us to:
- Improve childhood literacy. Studies show that children read four more hours a week when they have access to diverse books. That's why we've donated over 100,000 diverse books to schools and libraries across all 50 states and Washington, DC.
- Amplify diverse creators. Through our mentorships, workshops, and grants, we've supported to hundreds of writers and illustrators, including award-winning authors like Angie Thomas, Angeline Boulley, and Amina Luqman-Dawson.
- Diversify the publishing industry. Our Internship Grant program has offered career guidance and financial support to over 110 diverse college students interested in a publishing a career. 70 percent of our grantees are now employed in the publishing industry.
- Fighting book bans. As censorship and book challenges have spread nationwide, WNDB supports the affected creators and educators via our Books Save Lives initiative.
