Only 1% of children’s books published in the United States depict characters from American Indian and First Nation populations, according to the 2019 statistics compiled by the Cooperative Children’s Book Center. When Native kids open a book, what do they find? More often than not, it isn’t themselves.

To address this issue head on, WNDB has created the Native Fund. This initiative aims not only to give Native books to Native students, but to support Native creatives to hone their work and get their books published. We will also develop a Native Kidlit Resource Website that will act as a one-stop resource for educators about Native children’s literature.
