Banned Books Week 2024

Help Support an Aging School Library in Virginia and Beyond

Banned Books Week 2024 image

This Banned Books Week, WNDB is supporting a middle school library in northern Virginia that has faced an onslaught of book challenges since 2021. Their incredible librarian has asked to stay anonymous out of concern for hateful backlash, but they have a request for WNDB—can we help replace their library's decades-old bookshelves that are falling apart and fill those shelves with diverse books?

Your support will help us provide this school with:

  • High-quality wooden shelving
  • Diverse books to fill their new shelves
  • Bean bags for students to read and relax in
  • An author visit with a diverse writer to inspire creativity and a love of reading in the students, over half of whom live below the poverty line.

A $25 donation will help us buy 4 diverse books. A $100 donation will help us buy a bean bag. If you donate over $25, we'll send you a limited edition WNDB pin!

Your gift will bring a lot of hope and healing to a community that has navigated over 70 book challenges and where librarians have been called ‘perverts’ and ‘groomers’ at school board meetings. We'll also be able to support other schools and libraries that have been impacted by book bans, and continue our mission of building empathy through the power of diverse literature.

The book banning movement might have spread nationwide, but we stay hopeful because of the educators who are refusing to back down and because of our amazing WNDB community that understands why readers deserve access to diverse shelves. Thank you for fighting this fight with us.
